Kids

Your child's first visit

When should my child first see a dentist?
Many pediatric dental associations recommend visiting the dentist as soon as the first tooth comes into the mouth, or latest by the child's first birthday 🎈 We know it's early, and please don't worry! This is a chance for us to know you and your child better, to pave the way for healthy and positive dental experiences in the future.

What happens at the first visit for my child?
We get to know your child, check their oral cavity and advise you regarding their dental needs, if any. We also discuss home based oral hygiene methods. The focus is on understanding the child's temperament, creating a bond, and evaluating the need for treatment. We always want the first visit to be a positive experience, as it lays the groundwork for future dental visits. More about our gentle approach.

How can I prepare my child for the visit?
Speak about the visit in a calm, positive way. You could make it sound like a visit to a friend or relative’s place. Never ever create fear about the dentist in your child's mind! You can say the dentist will check and count their teeth, and they may even get a gift at the end!

Clinical tip - children mirror their parents. If the parent is afraid or apprehensive, it's difficult for the child to remain calm, and vice versa. Channel the energy you want your child to have!

Baby teeth and treatment

Can we do root canals in primary teeth?
Yes, when the tooth can be saved. A root canal can treat infection and help keep a milk tooth. After a check-up, we explain which treatment suits your child's tooth. And don't worry, a root canal treated baby tooth falls out the same way as a natural tooth!

Is treatment of milk teeth necessary?
Yes, definitely. Milk teeth help with chewing, speech and space for permanent teeth. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infection. Treatment depends on factors like the patient’s symptoms, depth of the cavity, duration the tooth is expected to remain in the mouth, the age of the child etc. After an examination, we explain what needs treatment and what can be watched.

Helping a scared child

My child is scared of the dentist. What can I do?
Talk to us! We try our best to understand the child and their family, their past dental and medical experiences. Tell us what worries you and your child. We plan the visit around their comfort. We can't promise a no-crying visit, but we do our best to make sure your little one leaves with a smile 😊 Read about our gentle approach.

Will treatment start on the first visit?
It depends on your child, their comfort and cooperation, and how urgently care is needed. We create an individualised treatment plan for each child.

Will my child be able to manage with the treatment?
We assess what your child can manage and discuss the options before treatment. Laughing gas or other sedation may help when suitable after assessment. More about care for nervous children.

Clinical tip: Most of the parents are surprised when they see how well their kids cope with dental work. Never underestimate your child, they are stronger than you think!

Adults

I am nervous about dental treatment. Can you help?
Yes. Talk to us! Tell us what worries you or about a difficult past experience. We discuss the treatment and create an individualised plan based on your priorities. We also offer laughing gas sedation for adults. Read about gentle care for adults.

I have not seen a dentist in years. Where do I start?
With a check-up and a conversation. We explain what needs attention, the priority of each treatment and the next step. You can ask questions at every stage. Nothing begins until we are all on the same page.

Do you treat adults as well as children?
Yes. We are a family dental practice with an in house pediatric dentist. Dr. Anita Chhabra brings her years of empathy and experience to the clinic, and Dr. Rachaita Chhabra brings the pediatric focus. Adults are welcome for general dental care, including routine examinations, preventive care, cleaning and polishings, fillings, crowns, root canal treatment and tooth replacement, braces and aligners, smile designing, full mouth rehabilitations etc.
